It was reported on CNN about an hour ago that this child went into a coma last night and died earlier this evening.

This is really ridiculous because the Catholic Church allowed this guy to continue in the priesthood despite the fact that he fathered a child. Furthermore, when CNN tracked down the priest, they were told by a Bishop that the priest had been suspended for allegedly having another affair with an underage girl around the same time.

Dylan, this isn't anything new. I'm just glad he's with women, and they're of age.
My sister-in-law had an affair with our priest for 3 years. The way I see it, I have a get out of hell free card.
Oh I know it's nothing new. The troubling thing about this case is the fact that the church made her sign a statement of silence, then paid her a paltry sum of money that amounted to les than 11 grand a year for support while allowing the priest to continue to practice. The child died earlier this evening, just before the whole story ran on CNN.
CNN called the priest on his cell phone and got hung up on, his diocese is hiding him from the press and yet the Church is claiming they did nothing wrong.

I'm sorry to hear the child died, that's upsetting.
It's not surprising what the Catholic church does. They protected the priests molesting children, and got off cheap in my opinion.
If you look back in history, and I know you have, you will see all of the Pope's Cardinals, Bishop's etc, that have fathered children.
After the Inquisitions and what they did to Galileo and the Native Americans, it's pretty easy to deny any wrong doing.

The Catholic church seems to spend an inordinate amount time saying that, don't they?

Let's see if I understand this. Christians strive to attain the perfection of Jesus, and when they invariably fail, they are called hypocrites by people who would NEVER try to hold themselves to those same standards. Does that about describe it?
Truths About Liberals #9. The Liberal creed is, "Do as I say, not as I do."
Spirit,
What exactly are you really wanting to say here for starters and what's with the liberals remark?

For the love of God man, DON'T FEED THE TROLL!
The Spirit, as far as I've observed, likes to go into a random seed, insert a completely off-topic remark about "the dirty libruls" regardless of the subject at hand, and go off on his merry way, devolving the discussion into a twenty-comment flame war over whether he was right or wrong. He posts for the purpose of agitation, nothing more.
Don't give him any credence, just ignore him.

Dylan, don't even acknowledge his remarks. He drops in to troll, but never reads the seed or any comments.
He says he's a christian, but the Christian's I know try to create dialog, not hate.
Well done Spirit.

Yeah I don't really know who it is, but thanks for the heads up and all. I'm not really into deleting posts unless they're way out of line, but now I know sooooooooooo
Thanks both of you.................
I just state them, I don't explain them. It's just that I get a wee bit tired of bigots coming out from under their rocks every time the subject of Christians comes up.
It's a perfectly understandable reaction to a sensitive topic, but you don't need to slander every liberal with a massive brush in the process. You speak ill of bigots who overgeneralize about Christians, and yet you post misinformed "Truths About Liberals", which in and of itself is bigoted and overgeneralized.

Ah, so you believe I should search for the FEW liberals who oppose abortion and hold them up as proof that liberals are shining examples of the pro-life movement? You think I should ignore the liberals who believe in higher taxes, higher spending and bigger government and I should move heaven and earth to find liberals who believe the exact opposite? ARE there any? Perhaps you also think I should also point at someone's pet tiger as proof that it is perfectly safe to stroll through the jungles of India.
It isn't bigotry. It's common sense. There is a REASON for stereotypes.
No Spirit, if you state a position, then you shoul dbe ready to explain that position as well, at least on my threads you should. You come on here and attack liberals, which I am not, and you attack Christains, which I am and then come back and state you only state your point of view and don't explain that very point of view? Not on this thread you don't.
Furthermore, don't come on here trying to make a political derail as you did in #3.6, kindly stick to the topic of the thread, it's that simple. And if you're either unready and/or unwilling to explain your stance, then you should probably find another thread with which to entertain yourself.
Have a good day.

Ahhh the Catholic Church, you gotta love em. My question is this.....They paid support for 22 years, an amount agreed upon by both the Mother and the Church and now they should be on the hook for more???????? The Church sucks on morality and conscience, but they did pay up in accordance with the agreement. How much has the mother and the 22 year old man contributed to these medical bills???????? Make no mistake, the Catholic Church sucks. But I wonder when should their liability for this man cease???
I would be the last one to defend the Catholic church. The misbehavior of the Church throughout the centuries is why we have PROTESTants. I too condemn them for allowing homosexual pedophiles to corrupt the priesthood. I too condemn them for shielding this priest. But I will NOT use this incident or any other to bash Christians for the inability of people to live up to the perfection of God. That would make me a hypocrite -- or an anti-Christian bigot.
Tired of F'Ups,
Good morning to you and thanks for dropping by. In the special interest piece I watched on CNN yesterday, a few things were brought up concerning the financial responsibility issue of this story. The first one was, did the Church hold the priest financially responsible for any of the monies paid this woman and the Child? No answer from the church. The big one was that when the child became diagnosed with brain cancer, the church basically said too bad, however 2 days after the story broke, the Catholic Church sent a check for the funeral expenses, so obviously the church felt some amount of responsibility, funerals are not cheap events these days. When they talked to the priest who negotiated this deal, the priest admitted that the move was originally made to keep the woman silent about the priest fathering the child, that it wasn't right when it happened but it's just the way it is. To me this is unconscionable.
Once again the Catholic Church displays their willingness to cover up it's dirty laundry while allowing those guilty of that dirty laundry to remain in the priesthood for over 20 more years. Priest are not allowed to marry let alone father children. Why then is the church violating its own policy by allowing this guy to keep practicing the priesthood? They're screaming at Pat Kennedy, refusing to allow him to take communion for his abortion stance, they're screaming at the D.C. government over that debacle concerning the pulling of services, yet they HIDE a priest for 22 years, allowing him to continue to preach, counsel, hear confession, etc.
This priest was recently suspended as well by a bishop from another diocese for allegedly having another sexual encounter with an alleged underage woman during the same period of time. And the church is openly hiding this guy.
Now this child turned young man has died, CNN reported he slipped into a coma Thanksgiving night and died about 90 minutes before the piece aired yesterday afternoon.
While this story is tragic by nature, and it is, my point is that the story once again lays wide open to the world the hypocricy and underhanded dealings embedded within the heirachy of the Catholic Church.

There seems to be no end to their hypocrisy. It is now a continuous stream of secrets being uncovered that the church itself has been involved in and covered up. They are clearly willing to do anything to protect their investments and keep the money flowing in.
These are the same people who are in Washington trying to shape our political future. The disgrace from the churches keeps piling up and yet they persist in trying to paint themselves as being God's disciples above judgment and questions from the masses. Religion is not spirituality. Ministers and priests do not speak for God, interpretation is not gospel, the millions who are out there trashing Obama are not superior to the rest of us (judge not, lest ye be judged) and the streets if heaven, if there is one, are not paved with gold. Cursing is not taking the Lord's name in vain -- going to war and expecting Him to be on your side while you pillage and destroy in his name is.
My cousin had an affair with a priest he did the decent thing and left the priesthood I haven't heard anything from them in years. They where treated like outcasts by members of the family. People forget that they take a vow of chastity yet they still have desires. Unfortunately the Catholic Church is been racked by scandal's through their own fault in not doing full back ground checks one their priest's.You can mock them and ridicule them but I say, Take the beam out of your eye before you take the splinter out of my brothers eye and let those who have not sinned cast the first stone.

Eamonn,
Thaks for dropping by the thread. While I agree with you 100%, the Bible also teaches Christians in no uncertain terms that we are to hold our brethren accountable:
Leviticus 19:17 You shall not hate your fellow countryman in your heart; you may surely reprove your neighbor, but shall not incur sin because of him.
Luke 17:3 "Be on your guard! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.
Galatians 6:1 Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.
2 Thessalonians 3:15 Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.
James 5:19-20 My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
So while Christians are not supposed to be judgmental, Christians ARE commanded and taught to hold the brethren accountable to the teachings of the Gospel

Nothing new here - I knew an Army priest who had a lady friend, played poker, drank, etc. One of my former neighbors had a long-term affair with her priest when he should have been counseling her on the death of her mother and other issues.
Religious leaders do have certain standards by which they are to be judged. Not all live up to those standards. The idea of people not having relationships is something that needs to be re-visited. Certainly we know that many Catholic nuns and priests do have relationships. Sometimes it seems that the leadership Catholic Church does need to be more truthful. All religious institutions need to be very clear about the issue of child molestation and other issues that are harmful to their congregants. All religions have things that need to be cleaned up.

In reply to both the above,if you have not seen already there was a British situation comedy called FatherTed to the rest of the world it was a comedy to catholics and with the Irish in particular it was a documentary. I have a brother who is in the Benedictines his view on Father Ted was it was very true to life. Dave they are called "spiritual sisters" if they are only friends. My brother has said that it's not unusal in his community for several of the monks to have spiritual sisters no harms come,s of it, it's way for them to relive the pressure of chastity. Their desires don't die neither does their love for their fellow Christians.
